Optical fiber sensors for monitoring cement paste carbonation

Abstract The use of concrete has been widespread in our society housing and infrastructure, despite the environmental cost associated with its production. Its decay poses a social, economic, problem. Currently, carbonation cement paste is monitored through measurement pH, several optical fiber sensors (OFS) have produced for this purpose. In current work focus is, also, on monitoring an OFS, but not pH measurements. Single reflectance spectroscopy, previously employed to measure durability, used monitor discoloration caused by carbonation. As front reaches tip embedded paste, signal reflected onto increases. accelerated two limestone samples atmosphere 100% CO 2 was successfully monitored. applicability sensor operational ambient confirmed at 3% . cross interference from water ingress egress also evaluated, it didn’t hinder measurements Therefore, novel OFS capable measuring achieved.
